Four easy ways to combine colours

Whether you want to combine one, two or three colours – harmonious selection is the golden rule. Our four colour schemes will help you create atmospheric effects every time. Simply use the colours from the colour wheel.

Monochrome
Complementary
Analogue
Triad
Monochrome
SENSATIONAL MONOCHROME

With the monochrome colour scheme, the colour nuances of an individual main colour are used. In colour nuances the bathroom feels calmer than if only one colour is used everywhere - and the accessories are much easier to adapt.

Complementary
THE SUBTLE COMBINATION OF OPPOSITES

To create a complementary contrast, two colours are chosen that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. One of the two colours is used more as an accent, since otherwise the effect can be too jarring.

Analogue
NATURALNESS NURTURES STRENGTH

Here, colours that lie directly adjacent to each other on the colour wheel are used. The analogue colour scheme is often found in nature; it is a harmonious, risk-free design style, especially if the strong colour is used to create accents and the calmer colour for larger areas.

Triad
THREE COLOURS WITH A BIG IMPACT

The triadic colour scheme is the boldest, using 3 colours from different sectors of the colour wheel. With muted colours, however, this will never become garish and striking, but instead looks harmonious.

10 expert tips from the designer

Gesa Hansen’s recommendations for great colour concepts

Used correctly, colour can create amazing effects. Colour can make bathrooms look bigger, more welcoming and cosier. Or the opposite.

COLOUR CREATES A HOMELY FEEL

A classic choice, white can often feel cold and sterile in a bathroom. Colours help to create a more homely and welcoming atmosphere.

LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION

There are no rules when it comes to choosing colours. All hues are allowed, provided they have a feel-good effect. If you’re not sure, start with shades of blue. These are easiest to combine and always harmonise, like shades of denim on jeans.

START WITH DETAILS

Take it slowly when it comes to creating colour effects. Rather than tiling an entire wall, start with a coloured washbasin and then see how it looks. This is far easier to change if you’re not happy with your choice.

PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHT

Light effects can make a colour look completely different. Before you make your final choice, test the colour in different areas and observe how it changes with the light.

LOUD COLOURS, QUIET COLOURS

Colours are organised by temperature, from warm red to cool blue. But it’s important to consider the volume of a colour too. For larger areas, we recommend ‘quiet’ pastel shades and mid tones. Loud colours are better suited for details.

SMALL SPACES, BIG EFFECT

Even small rooms can look good with loud colours. Applied correctly, they can make a room look bigger. Always paint the smaller wall of a room in colour and leave the ceiling light or white. This contrast creates an impression of space.

COLOURS CREATE A WELCOMING FEEL

Large bathrooms are comfortable, but can also feel stark and cool. Colours can be used to break up the space. This creates a more welcoming, cosy atmosphere conducive to a sense of well-being

NATURE AS AN EXAMPLE

Combining colours is easier than you think. Nature shows us how: just look at a meadow of flowers to see the beautiful vibrant mix of different and supposedly contrasting colours. Use this as your inspiration.

TRY NEW COMBINATIONS

You don’t always need to change every colour if you fancy a new look. Any new combination of colours completely changes the atmosphere. Red with yellow, for example, looks completely different than red with black.

HOW TO INVENT YOUR OWN COLOUR CONCEPT

A moodboard can help you to create your own colour concept. Find different samples of material and arrange them beside each other to see whether the colours coordinate. The Villeroy & Boch colour wheel will help you too. You can download this as a PDF file.
